Osborn and Grant were close friends, and leaders of the eugenics movement in the USA. Similarly, the astronomer and physicist Samuel Pierpont Langley, who became the third secretary of the Smithsonian Institution in 1887, did not favor the kind of studies which the Bureau of American Ethnology was carrying out in the ﬁeld, building an impressive ethnographic record of Indian cultures, and studying their languages, myths and rituals.
