Behavioural treatment studies provide some of the most comprehensive treatment literature on problem gambling. e. behaviour modi®cation) have involved aversion therapy using physical or imaginal stimuli (Barker & Miller, 1968; Goorney, 1968; Seager, 1970) in order to decrease positive reinforcement related to the gambling and increase negative reinforcement (Petry, 2002). Subsequent behavioural treatments to treat problem gambling that were reported in the literature included controlled gambling/behavioural counselling (Dickerson & Weeks, 1979; Rankin, 1982), positive reinforcement of gambling abstinence and contingency contracting (Cotler, 1971), paradoxical intention (Victor & Krug, 1967), covert sensitization (Bannister, 1977; Cotler, 1971) and systematic desensitization (Kraft, 1970).

Improvements in time and amount spent on gambling, negative results of gambling, problem gambling behaviours and psychological distress were noticed post-treatment compared with pre-treatment. These studies showed that although the available evidence is limited, self-exclusion programmes can be effective for some programme gamblers. Although behavioural treatments of problem gambling show signi®cant improvements they do have a number of methodological shortcomings. Most of these treatment studies (especially earlier ones) have small sample sizes, limited follow-up periods and do not involve comparisons with other treatments.
