Example text

As always, God’s desire is to be known, loved, and appreciated. “No other gods” are not the words of a demanding dictator; they are the words of a God who declares His name to be Jealous. It’s a mind-boggling but scriptural fact: The infinite God of the universe is intensely jealous for the affection of human hearts. His commandments are driven by love. Centuries of rabbinic teaching have treated the Sinai encounter as a betrothal ceremony. In fact, it was considered so by the prophets (Jeremiah 2:2; Ezekiel 16:8), who often called Israel’s unfaithfulness adultery.

On the safe side of the sea, God leads His people to a mountain and reveals Himself more clearly. The events at Sinai are both awe inspiring and terrifying: a three-day preparation and cleansing period, a dense cloud, thunder and lightning, a loud horn blast from heaven, smoke and fire, a voice from above, strict boundaries around the sacred space, and a threat of death for anyone who gets too close. These events are also a tangible endorsement of the instructions about to be handed down through Moses: the Ten Commandments and numerous accompanying laws.

Many have believed the overall message of the Bible, but few have grasped the entire story. That’s because God’s message is simple enough for a child to embrace, yet His epic story is complex enough to mystify even the most curious intellect. We grasp the pieces much more easily than we comprehend the whole. Many people can recite the basic message of the Bible—God created a good world, human beings sinned and fell, and God eventually sent a solution in the form of His Son, who was offered as a sacrifice for sin and will one day return to rule—and many have learned important life principles from the lives of prominent biblical characters—faith from the life of Abraham, courage from the conflict between David and Goliath, compassion from the story of the Good Samaritan, forgiveness from the parable of the Prodigal Son.
